YouTube Channel SEO Checker

Audit a whole channel in one pass: identity, About page, discovery keywords, the last 20 uploads and how the home tab is laid out. You get a score out of 100 and the fixes worth the most points first.

What gets checked

Five parts of a channel, mapped

Channel SEO is everything a viewer or YouTube's systems can read without opening a video. Each numbered area below is one category of the score.

Identity

Name, handle and banner — what someone sees in half a second.

The channel description, its opening line, links, contact, country and language.

3
Discovery

Channel keywords, whether they match what you upload, and the topic YouTube assigns.

20 pts
4
Uploads

Titles, descriptions and tags, averaged across the last 20 videos.

Channel vs video

Set once, inherited by every upload

Video metadata competes one upload at a time. Channel metadata is the context around all of it: it tells YouTube what the channel is about before any single video has earned an audience, and it is what a curious viewer reads before subscribing.

Channel level

Fix it once and it applies everywhere. A clear About page, a consistent keyword set and titled playlists keep working for every upload that follows, including the ones you have not made yet.

Video level

Fix it per upload. This checker averages your last 20 so you can see the habit, not one bad title. To work on a single video, the Video SEO Checker goes field by field.

03
Reading the score

What to do at each band

The score measures whether the channel is described well. It does not measure whether the videos are good, and a perfect score will not rescue content nobody wants to watch.

0–49
Basics missing

Something a viewer expects is not there — a banner, an About page, keywords. Work top to bottom through the priority list; each fix is worth several points.

50–69
Set up, not tuned

Everything exists but a few fields are thin. The biggest gains are usually the About opening line and channel keywords.

70–84
Solid

The channel reads clearly. Remaining points tend to be structure: a trailer, playlist descriptions, a tidier home tab.

85–100
Well described

Nothing here is holding the channel back. Re-check after a change of direction, and spend the time on the videos instead.

04
Common mistakes

What channels get wrong most often

Most of these cost points in the audit, and each takes under ten minutes to fix in YouTube Studio.

Opening the About with a greeting

Only the first 150 characters show on the channel card and in search. "Hi and welcome!" uses a third of them.

Open with the topic

"Weeknight recipes under 30 minutes, every Tuesday" tells a stranger what they will get.

Single-word channel keywords

"tech", "reviews" and "gaming" match millions of channels and describe none of them.

Use the phrases people search

"budget phone reviews", "android camera tests" — five to fifteen of them.

Keywords from three years ago

Channels drift. Keywords that describe the old topic tell YouTube the wrong thing about the new videos.

Update when the content changes

Re-read the list whenever a new series starts. The consistency check flags drift.

Banner text outside the safe area

On phones, only a 1546×423 strip of the banner shows. Schedules and names at the edges get cropped.

Keep text in the centre strip

Design at 2560×1440 and preview on a phone before publishing.

A home tab that is just the uploads feed

New visitors see your most recent video, which may not be your best introduction.

Add a trailer and three sections

Popular uploads, then one row per series. It takes five minutes in Customisation.

Questions

Frequently asked

Does a higher score mean more views?+

No. It measures whether the channel is described clearly and completely. That helps YouTube and viewers understand the channel, but views still come from videos people want to watch.

What does it read?+

Public channel data: name, handle, banner, About text, country and language, keywords, YouTube's topic for the channel, trailer, home-tab sections, playlists, and the titles, descriptions and tags of the last 20 public uploads.

Do I need to sign in?+

No. Everything checked is public. There is no account and no history; the channel's public data is cached for up to 12 hours so a repeat check doesn't query YouTube again.

Why only the last 20 uploads?+

It reflects current habits. A channel that fixed its titles last month should not be marked down for videos from 2021.

How quickly do changes show?+

Auditing the channel that's already on screen again fetches fresh data from YouTube, so a change made in Studio shows up straight away. Other lookups use a copy cached for up to 12 hours. Banner and avatar updates can also take a while to propagate on YouTube's side.

Can I check a competitor?+

Yes, any public channel. Comparing your breakdown with a channel you admire in the same niche is often more useful than the number itself.
