AI YouTube Tag Generator
Paste your video title or describe the video and get a balanced set of tags, from the exact phrase to related searches. Pick the ones that fit, watch the 500-character limit, and copy them straight into YouTube Studio. Free, no sign-up.
How it works
From one topic to a full tag box
Your title or description is matched against what people type into YouTube search. The AI widens that list with close variations, scores every phrase out of 100, and pre-selects the best ones while leaving room in the 500 characters YouTube gives you.
Real searches first
The phrases YouTube suggests as you type your topic are the starting point, so most tags match something people actually search for.
AI fills the gaps
The AI adds wider and related phrases that suggestions miss, removes duplicates, and gives every tag a score so the strongest rise to the top.
Room left to adjust
The highest-scoring tags are selected first, stopping short of 500 so you can still add a few. Swap any tag and the count updates instantly.
Paste into Studio
How to add tags to a YouTube video
Tags go in the Tags box in YouTube Studio, below the description. It is the same box for long videos and Shorts, and you can change it at any time after publishing — copy the set from the generator and paste it in.
On a computer
- 01Copy your tags
Select the tags you want here and press Copy. They come out comma-separated, best score first.
- 02Open YouTube Studio
Go to Content and click the pencil (Details) icon next to the video. New uploads show the same page.
- 03Click Show more
Tags sit below the description, hidden until you expand the extra options.
- 04Paste and save
Paste into the Tags box. Studio splits the list at each comma and shows the count out of 500. Then click Save.
In the YouTube Studio app
- Open the YouTube Studio app and go to Content.
- Pick the video or Short and tap the pencil to edit it.
- Open the extra options and find Tags.
- Paste the list and save. Tags can be changed any time after publishing.
The score
What the number on each tag means
Every tag is scored out of 100 on four things you can check: whether YouTube's search box suggests the phrase, how closely it matches your topic, its length, and how highly the AI ranked it. It measures fit, not search volume. Specific phrases people search for land in the middle of the target; wider ones sit further out.
Keep these
Your main phrase and the long-tail versions people search for. These describe the video best and are selected first.
Good to add
Broader words that place the video in its wider topic. Add them if you have room after the specific tags.
Only if they fit
Related searches around your topic. Use the ones your video actually covers and skip the rest.
The 500 limit
How YouTube counts the tag box
The limit is 500 characters for all tags together, not per tag. The separators count too, and a tag with a space in it is counted with quotes around it. The generator counts the same way, so the number you see matches Studio.
Spend it on the specific tags
If you run short, remove the lowest scores first. They are the least tied to your video and the easiest to replace.
You don't need all 500
Ten to fifteen accurate tags do more than thirty loose ones. That is why the generator stops short of the limit.
Highest score first
Tags are copied in the order shown, best score first, so the most useful ones sit at the top of the Studio field.
Tag strategy
Build a balanced tag mix
A good set works like a funnel: the exact phrase first, specific long-tail versions next, then a few broad and related words. That order is what the score rewards, and it leaves room in the 500 characters for the tags only you know to add.
Exact match
2 to 3 tagsThe main phrase of the video, written the way people search for it, plus one or two close variations.
sourdough bread · sourdough bread recipe
Long-tail
4 to 6 tagsYour topic plus a qualifier: who it is for, how long it takes, what problem it solves. Fewer videos compete for these.
sourdough bread for beginners · sourdough bread mistakes
Broad
3 to 4 tagsThe category the video belongs to. Short, high-volume words that place it in a wider topic.
sourdough · bread · baking
Related
2 to 4 tagsSearches your viewers make around the topic. Use the ones that genuinely relate to what you cover.
homemade bread · easy bread recipe

Tags vs hashtags
Tags vs hashtags vs keywords
All three carry the words your video is about, but they live in different places and do different jobs. Most of the weight sits in the title and description; tags and hashtags fill in around them.
Tags
- Where
- YouTube Studio → Tags box
- Seen by viewers
- No, hidden
- Limit
- 500 characters in total

- Limit
- Keep to a handful — too many and YouTube ignores them all

YouTube Shorts
Tags for YouTube Shorts
Shorts take tags the same way long videos do, and this generator works for both. What changes is how much they matter: a Short is found mostly through the Shorts feed, so keep the set small and specific.
Same Tags box
Shorts use the same Tags field as long videos. On a phone, upload first, then edit the Short in the YouTube Studio app to add them.
Fewer, more specific
Three to five tags that name the exact topic do the job. A Short is about one thing, so the tag set can be too.
Skip “shorts”
YouTube recognises a Short from the video itself. A shorts tag says nothing about the topic, so this generator filters it out.
Hashtags show, tags don't
Viewers see hashtags on a Short but never its tags. Put the effort into the title and a few hashtags first.
What tags do
A small signal, used well
YouTube describes tags as most useful when your topic is often misspelled. Your title, thumbnail and description carry far more weight, so treat tags as the finishing step.
Tags help with
- Common misspellings of your topic or a name
- Words with two meanings, so YouTube knows which one you mean
- Alternative names, abbreviations and other spellings
- Keeping the same keywords across a series of videos
Tags won't fix
- A title that doesn't say what the video is about
- A thumbnail people scroll past
- Low watch time, since viewers decide that themselves
- Off-topic tags, which YouTube's policies treat as misleading
Mistakes
Tagging mistakes to avoid
Most tagging problems come from doing too much rather than too little. These six are the common ones — and the generator already guards against several of them.
Stuffing the box
✕Thirty loosely related phrases to fill all 500 characters.
✓Ten to fifteen tags that describe this video. YouTube treats excessive tagging as spam.
Riding a trend
✕Tagging a viral topic, creator or game the video never mentions.
✓Only tag what the video covers. Off-topic tags count as misleading metadata.
Borrowing a channel's name
✕Copying a bigger channel's brand or show name into your tags.
✓Study their topic tags for wording, but leave their names out.
Single words only
✕“bread, baking, food” — so broad they match millions of videos.
✓Lead with two-to-four word phrases; keep one or two broad words at the end.
Near-duplicates
✕“sourdough recipe”, “sourdough recipes”, “recipe sourdough”.
✓One spelling per idea. This generator folds plurals together for you.
Filler tags
✕shorts, viral, trending, subscribe, youtube.
✓They say nothing about the topic and spend characters. The generator removes them.
Tags from a link
Find the tags another video uses
Searching for a tag generator that takes a YouTube URL? Generating tags and reading another video's tags are two different jobs, and the second has its own tool.
This generator works from your title, so it can't read another video. To see the tags a video already uses, paste its link into the Tag Extractor. Search your keyword on YouTube, open the top few results, and look for phrases they share.
Phrases that show up both in your generated set and on the videos that rank are the strongest to keep. Treat the rest as ideas, and never copy another channel's name.

Frequently asked
Is it really free?
Yes. No sign-up, nothing added to what you copy, and a generous daily allowance of fresh generations for every visitor. Topics someone has already generated come back free.
How do I add the tags in YouTube Studio?
Copy them here, open your video in Studio, choose Show more under the description and paste into the Tags field. Studio splits them at the commas.
How are characters counted?
All tags together can use 500 characters. Commas between tags count, and a tag that contains a space is counted with two quote marks around it. The counter here follows the same rule.
Where do the phrases come from?
From YouTube's own search suggestions for your topic, the phrases it shows as you type. The AI then adds related phrases and scores each one out of 100.
Should I use every tag?
No. Remove anything that doesn't describe your video. Tags that don't match the content can count as misleading metadata under YouTube's policies.
How many tags should I use?
Ten to fifteen accurate tags is plenty for most videos. YouTube allows 500 characters in total, but adding loosely related tags to fill the box adds nothing, and excessive tagging is against YouTube's spam policies.
Can I add tags to YouTube Shorts?
Yes. Shorts use the same Tags box as long videos. On a phone, upload the Short first, then edit it in the YouTube Studio app to add tags. Three to five specific tags are enough, and there is no need for a shorts tag.
What is the difference between tags and hashtags?
Tags are hidden keywords in YouTube Studio's Tags box that help YouTube understand the topic. Hashtags start with #, sit in the title or description, are visible to viewers and open a feed of videos using them.
Can I generate tags from a YouTube video link?
This generator works from your title or a description of your video. To see the tags an existing video uses, paste its link into the Tag Extractor instead.
Can I change tags after publishing?
Yes, at any time and with no penalty. Open the video in YouTube Studio, edit the Tags box and save.
What does the score mean?
It adds up four checks, 100 points in all: whether YouTube's search suggestions include the phrase (40), how closely it matches your topic (30), its length (15) and how highly the AI ranked it (15). It measures fit, not search volume. Tags with a search icon appear in those suggestions, or inside a longer suggested search.
